NASA is short for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. It is a United States federal government agency that administers the national space program. NASA also undertakes a wide variety of research in different scientific and engineering fields including aeronautics.
NASA was established in 1958, replacing the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). Notably, NASA was founded as a largely civilian operation. Before this, most serious spaceflight efforts were the domain of the military.
Most of NASA's scientific data, research and associated media resources are public domain. The exceptions tend to be material that includes personal images or information. In most cases anyone can use NASA images as long as they stick to a few simple rules[1].
