The Moon is Earth's only major natural satellite. Its official IAU name is "the Moon"[1] although it is sometimes referred to as "Luna". Of course, every language has at least one name for the Moon.
The Moon orbits Earth approximately once per month (the word "month" comes from "moon"). It is one of the most important natural cycles for Earth, along with the day and the year.
On average the Moon is about 384,400 km (238,900 mi) from Earth.
